I Got Stoned & I Missed It

Group shot of Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show.

For those Shel Silverstein aficionados out there, you’ll know of his wonderful collaboration with the equally wonderful Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. Well, while I missed last week’s post not cuz I was stoned, but cuz I forgot, I figured I’d utilize a little lie and the title of a poem to capture your attention. So here you are.

Before we go any farther, I give you the beautiful fellas from the Medicine Show singing some of Shel’s lines. Here ya go.

If you’d rather stay with the author and his grizzly old voice, here you go.

By now you are probably thinking those guys were the silliest rock band, and maybe the worst, I have ever seen! Well, there is no accounting for taste and I love them. Along with the brilliant words of Shel, they make even the saddest things on earth seem wonderful, joyous, and full of sunshine. We need more of that.

So, when you make those videos for your students, those explanations of things deep and true, please take some time to be yourself. Be ok with dog barks or tea kettles suddenly screaming. Be ok with your hair and your musical taste. Don’t be so nervous cuz there are way weirder looking people out there than you who have been in videos.

I spoke with a whole lotta faculty over the last year and a half about making videos. The conversations were half about clicking things on computers and half some kind of therapy session about being comfortable in your own skin. “But I don’t like the way I look….” What am I supposed to say? Geeez.

Look at me.

Listen: You are amazing! You look amazing! Keep being amazing and make some short and informative videos so your students can SEE how excited you are, FEEL how important the information is, and maybe even have a laugh.
